  16. in New York City. After years in the theater as an actor, stage
  17. manager and set designer, Lerman launched a prolific and learned
  18. career writing on fashion and the arts. In a half-century association
  19. with Conde Nast magazines, he wrote and edited at Mademoiselle,
  20. Vogue and Vanity Fair, where in 1983 he served briefly as editor
  21. in chief.
